How (Not) To Lose Money With FX Currency Trading

Forex or FX currency trading is a risky business. Many people go into it with high hopes of getting rich and quickly find that it is easier to lose money in the foreign exchange markets than to make it. Even if you are ideally financed and have the best system, robot or plan, you may discover the sad fact that the one thing holding many traders back from success is themselves.

So in this article we look at some of the major pitfalls of forex trading and how to avoid them.

1. System hopping

One surefire way to lose money with forex trading is trying a system for a few days and giving up on it because it made a loss or two. Before you even start using a system you should be as sure as a person can be that it is going to be profitable. You have to accept losses and stick with it.

Remember that if you bail out every time that you are losing, you never give your systems a chance to put you back into profit. You will lose your shirt for sure if you hop from one system to another without giving anything a chance to work.

2. Dwelling on ‘what might have been’

One of the worst temptations of trading is being drawn into wasting time and energy on thinking about how much we could have made if only we had acted differently. Often a situation will arise that does not quite meet the requirements of your system. You wait, and perhaps it turns out that you could have made a lot of money if only you had acted.

But thinking this way is dangerous. Another time the same situation will turn against you. We tend to remember all of the lost chances to win and forget that by keeping to the plan, we also miss a lot of losing situations.

3. Impatience

You will lose money if you do not have the patience to wait for the right trading opportunity. A short run of losses can make us feel desperate for a successful trade, but we must still wait for the right market signals. Do not be led into acting too soon by excitement or the fear of missing an opportunity.

4. Hesitation

On the other hand, it is also important not to hesitate too long. When the right moment comes along, act with conviction. Have your plan written down and keep it in front of you at all times so that you know exactly when the signs are right for your trade. Do not wait until you see a trend forming to start thinking about your position size, leverage or stop loss. Everything should be in place so that you can take advantage of a genuine opportunity.

5. Letting emotions drive your trading

We all know the danger of letting our emotions lead us in any trading situation, at least in theory. In practice it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between fear and caution, or between profit maximizing strategies and greed. Having a written plan will help again here, as will training with a demo account where emotions will not be nearly so strong.

Some people find that they cannot make money with a demo account because they are getting into experimental trades, telling themselves that it does not matter because it is not real money. If they do then start trading with a real account they are completely unprepared for the emotional punch of real time trading and have not learned any discipline to help them handle it.

So whether you are trading in demo mode or for real, take it seriously. Be sure to avoid these traps if you want to make money with FX currency trading.

Forex Trading Signal Providers: What To Look For

As the popularity of trading the currency exchange markets online from home increases, the number of forex trading signal providers is increasing too. In fact they are proliferating to such an extent that it can be very difficult to know how to find the best one.

Signals are the main source of information for some traders who do not have the time, experience or inclination to analyze the markets for themselves but do not want to trust their trading to a robot. Equally they can be a useful source of additional information and trades for those who mainly make their own trading decisions.

You usually have to pay to subscribe to a forex signal service. Fees may be charged per month or per signal. Some companies offer a trial period where you can test their service on a demo account. If not, you will be paying out money from the start so to have a chance of making profits, you need to be trading at a level where you can expect to make more money from the signals than they are costing you.

The first thing that most people look at when considering forex trading signal providers is their recent results. This can be a mistake. Recent results are not as important as performance over the long term. So do not be seduced into signing up with a company who make a huge deal of their last month’s good results but will not tell you what their signals have made over a full year. Also remember that when they show their profits, they do not have to take account of the cost of the signal service itself.

Remember that most traders starting out in the forex markets lose money. Forex is a risky form of investment and you should be prepared for this. Losses are not always the fault of the information. Even if you are receiving profitable signals, you can make losses if you do not have a clear plan for managing your funds. It is very easy to take bigger risks than you should, so that an unexpected loss has a big impact.

Most companies who offer forex signals will send them to you by email and/or SMS text message. It is best to get both, although SMS alone can be enough for some people. The only problem with SMS messages is that it is very frustrating when one arrives and you are too far from a computer to access your account. If you are a serious forex trader relying on signals, you may want to get your PDA hooked up to your trading account so that you can deal with those signals that arrive when you are stuck in traffic or having lunch with a client.

Remember that the foreign exchange is a 24 hour market. Be prepared to be woken in the middle of night by your cell phone bleeping with an SMS that you need to act on right away. You may want to check how your spouse feels about this too. Even the best information from the top forex trading signal companies is probably not worth getting a divorce for!

Forex Expert Advisor Reviews

Forex expert advisor reviews can be very valuable for anyone thinking of investing in the foreign exchange market. If you are thinking of buying a forex robot to do your trading for you, you should certainly look at the reviews of expert advisors or EAs which is the name generally given to currency trading robots that operate on the free software platform Metatrader 4.

Currency trading is not the easiest style of investment to learn for a beginner, especially as most people trade their accounts themselves from their home computers. It is not just a question of giving your money to the broker or investment company and hoping for good results.

If you are going to trade on the foreign exchange market without a robot, you need to be constantly analyzing all kinds of charts, graphs and technical information so that you have a chance of working out when the prices are likely to rise and fall. As you can imagine, it takes time, experience and a lot of testing to learn to do this, even assuming that you have the kind of brain that easily handles numbers and complex charts.

However, if you use a software program to trade for you, otherwise known as a forex robot or expert advisor, it will automatically make all the calculations and open and close trades according to its settings. It will operate according to a certain system but you still have control of the settings.

The most important things to look for when you are reading forex expert advisor reviews are the results that the average user is getting, and whether the robot is suitable for your level of experience and your trading style, if you have one.

If you are a beginner you may not want something that is very difficult to set up. On the other hand if an EA is getting very good results, it could be worth spending the time to master it. There is no point in paying good money for a robot that will not be successful, however easy it may be to use.

Always remember that foreign exchange trading is risky. Robots will do what they are told but the market trends will not always follow a predicted pattern. You may lose money even if past results have been good. You should only invest what you can afford to lose, even though there is huge potential to make money with forex trading.

Forex expert advisor reviews are great for picking up hints and tips about how to use the software as well as comparisons of the different robots that are available.

Forex Trading Forum Hints And Tips

A forex trading forum is a popular place for beginners to go when they are just getting into forex trading. There are many internet forums and you can discuss any aspect of currency trading there. But should you trust the answers that you get? Are these online discussion sites really a valuable source of information, or just a drain on your time?

Forums began in the time of the Roman empire. At that time they were a physical space in the middle of the city a little like a market place but without a market. The men of the city would meet there to hear and debate matters of importance such as politics and the law.

Since then the word has come to mean any location or group in which discussion takes place and opinions can be aired. On the internet, it has gradually taken over from the term ‘bulletin board’ which was used for the old style of sites where members could post messages. The new format of forums is much easier to navigate and people can more easily get involved in discussions than they could on bulletin boards.

This means that it is very easy to either start or join in a discussion. If you have a question you can post it and you are almost certain to see replies. For some aspects of foreign exchange trading this can be very useful.

For example if you are thinking of investing money, time or both in a forex system, ebook, robot or training program, it can be very useful to check a forex trading forum for reviews and feeback from people who have already used the product that you are considering. Use the search facility to see if there is already a thread about the product and if not, start one by asking if anyone has experience of the product. Feedback from other users can help you decide whether something would be suitable for you or not.

It is best to find several different opinions before making up your mind. Remember that one person’s opinion is only one view and you might not agree with that person. They might have been looking for something different, or they might have had unusually good or bad luck with the product. If you find a lot of different opinions it is much more helpful. You can see what kind of person has a good experience with the product and what kind of person has a bad experience.

If you have questions about trading, a currency trading forum can be useful too. But again you need to think about who is replying to your question. You might not necessarily want to trust everybody.

Sometimes different users will disagree with each other because they have different ways of making money with FX. There are many different methods and when you get conflicting advice it can be confusing. So do not be distracted by all the people who will tell you that their way is best.

It is very easy to sound like an expert in a place where nobody knows you. All a person has to do is to make a lot of posts and sound experienced. In fact a high post count often just means that the person likes hanging out in the forum and does more talking than trading. Some users may never even have traded for real at all, but only used demo accounts. Remember that you do not know who these people are. You should not automatically trust everybody’s opinion.

Finally, take care that you are not becoming an addict yourself. It is very easy to waste a lot of time following random discussions and chatting. Have a clear purpose when you enter a forex trading forum and leave when you have found what you were looking for.

Metatrader 4 Expert Advisor: What You Need To Know

The Metatrader 4 expert advisor range is the most popular range of forex autopilot software. There is a wide choice of expert advisors designed to run on this free downloadable platform or framework that sets a structure for EAs to be built on. Whichever expert advisor (EA) you choose will act as a robot on the forex market, trading for you according to the boundaries that you set.

Clearly this has many advantages over making all of the moves in a trade yourself. The EA does not need breaks for eating, sleeping and human contact. Neither does it suffer from human weaknesses such as fear and over optimism which can distract us from our systems and lead us to exit a trade too soon or not soon enough. Once you have set it up it will obey your system to the letter all the time that it is online.

An EA will often protect your interests when you could not do it yourself. The opportunity to set a trailing stop is one example. A trailing stop automatically moves up with rising prices but stays in place if the market falls. This means that on a successful trade it protects a part of your profits without exiting too soon. On an unsuccessful trade it protects you from heavy losses just as a standard stop would do.

Some of the functions of an expert advisor depend on having it constantly connected to the internet. This because MT4 and the EA run on your own computer or server, not on your broker’s servers. For example if you have set a trailing stop, MT4 sends a message to your broker account to move the stop each time and it has to be connected to the internet to do that.

This means that to make the most of the potential of a Metatrader 4 expert advisor on a home computer you have to leave your computer online 24 hours Sunday night thru Friday unless you happen to have exited all of your trades before you stop work on any particular day.

Any break in the connection will mean that no more messages are sent to your brokerage so the trailing stop will be left where it was last set. It will still protect you from a large loss but it will not move up any more so you will have lost some of the advantage of having a system that works while you sleep.

However, some EAs can be hosted remotely. This means that you can set them up on an internet server instead of your own computer. This could be your own or a facility offered by the EA company. They may offer this option as an upgrade after you order their Metatrader 4 expert advisor.
